Poetry

I have decided to redo my idea for this page.  Ideally I would have wanted to post poems here the same way I post blog entries on the main page, but if it is possible, I have yet to figure out how to do it.  Instead, I will use this as a sort of table of contents for the poems posted there.  It tells when they were written, where to find them to read the poems, and sometimes the background as to why I wrote them in the first place.

The inspiration for this poem came after overhearing a conversation at a Chinese restaurant where a patron was asking a server what she should be offering her Buddha.  He said to give it four different kinds of food.  My thought was that her Buddha "eats" better than most children in the world.  Same restaurant, different table.  I overhear someone say that Jesus wasn't perfect either until he died.  Same restaurant, back to the first table.  They are talking about what animal they are.  Someone in my family asks what I am.  My response is that I'm not interested.  Couple of days later, another family member says that her god wouldn't do __________.  It doesn't even matter what goes in the blank.  When did we get to create our gods?

There's No Place Like Home--Click, Click, Click

I came home and wrote this after someone told me, "It's too bad you have to drive home."  They of course were referring to the actual amount of time I would have to spend driving from their house to mine, but it made me think--there's really no place I like better than being home.  I would never consider it a bad thing to go there, or something I have to do.  Sometimes though, when it does come to the drive, I wish I could be like Dorothy...click, click, click.

Death and My Response
April 2011

I wrote this poem about a week after getting the call saying my dad had died suddenly.  The call was a shock to say the least.  I don't remember much from that week.  I remember family coming in to my room to see me.  I remember Lauren just lying in my bed with me because she knew it would comfort me.  I remember Josh calling to see if I needed him to fly home to hug me.  I remember my great grandma coming to the door and giving me a hug.  I remember my mom crying and I remember Kim telling me he was sorry.  And I remember not telling anyone else what had happened.  I didn't want to hear people try to comfort me with words that couldn't possibly.
Now, two and a half weeks after my dear friends have experienced their own tragedy my response to death has not changed.  It still leaves me sobbing with a headache and dry heaves.  It seems appropriate since death wasn't a part of the plan at all.  It wasn't something we were ever supposed to experience.  So of course our response wouldn't be pleasant.

A Story to Tell
December 2010
Written: 10/19/09
This poem was written after a walk around Shevlin Park in Bend, Oregon.  There was a huge tree on it's side just off the path with hundreds of tree rings.  The more we walked, the more I saw and learned about the area around the park and I started thinking about that tree on the ground and what it's story of the area would have sounded like.

This poem was written at Newport, Oregon in the dining room of a friend's beach house.  I was the only one awake and was looking at the flower covered hillside while sipping my coffee.  The fog was moving in (or maybe out) and made everything seem ephemeral.

This poem was written in response to a human trafficking awareness seminar.  It's amazing to me that slavery still exists in America.  To find out more, check out http://www.cooath.org/.
