The author told a story she had heard as a teenager from a missionary in a jungle somewhere. A humongous snake had crawled into their home, resulting in them running out and getting someone from the village to take care of it. The man chopped off the head of the snake and came and told them the snake was dead. However, he said, it will take a little while for the snake to realize that he is dead. The snake continued to trash about in the house for hours, wreaking havoc on furniture, windows and walls. Arends then equated this to how Satan lives in today's world--totally defeated, but still thrashing around because he doesn't realize it yet. What a great picture of the world we live in.
